Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz: Кыргызстан), officially the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyz: Кыргыз Республикасы, Kyrgyz Respublikasy), is a country in Central Asia. The country is landlocked and is bordered by Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, China and Tajikistan. Half of the country, which has a total surface area of 199,949 km², lies above 3000 metres in the Tian Shan mountains. The capital is Bishkek in the north of the country. From the 19th century onwards, Kyrgyzstan came step by step under the authority of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. In 1936, Kyrgyzstan became a socialist Soviet republic.
