About this destination

Macau (traditional Chinese: 澳門; simplified Chinese: 澳门; pinyin: Àomén; Portuguese: Macau) is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China (just like Hong Kong). The official name of the region is therefore Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (traditional Chinese: 中華人民共和國澳門特別行政區; simplified Chinese: 中华人民共和国澳门特别行政区; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó Àomén Tèbié Xíngzhèngqū). Macau lives mainly off tourism and the many casinos located there. It is a former Portuguese colony and was at the time an important trading hub. Macau lies 70 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong and 145 kilometres from Guangzhou.
