Malaysia is a country in Southeast Asia. Islam is the largest religion. The country borders: Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand. The Malacca Peninsula developed into a leading Southeast Asian trading centre as trade between China and India increased through the busy Strait of Malacca. Islam arrived in the 14th century, followed by European traders in the 16th century, after which the Portuguese, Dutch and British successively dominated the Strait of Malacca. The British crown colony of the Straits Settlements was established in 1826, and in the years up to 1867 the British extended their control over the rest of the peninsula.
