Mongolia (Mongolian: Монгол Улс/, Russian: Монго́лия) is a country in Central and East Asia. In the north, the country borders the autonomous republics of Altai, Tuva and Buryatia, all part of the Russian Federation. It also borders the Transbaikal Krai (Zabaykalsky Krai) in the north, and in the south the country borders the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia, which belongs to China. Mongolia has been a democracy since 1990. The country lies on the Mongolian Plateau and has a continental climate with tundra and steppe regions in the north, mountainous terrain (Altai) in the centre, and desert (Gobi) in the south.
