About this destination
Oman, officially the Sultanate of Oman (Arabic: سلطنة عُمان Salṭanat ʿUmān), is a sultanate in West Asia, on the south-eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders the United Arab Emirates to the north-west, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the south-west. The area covers 309,500 km². Until 9 August 1970 it was known as Muscat and Oman. The country is a member of the Arab League and of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf. For centuries, Oman has been a centre for traders. In 1508 the most important port city, Muscat, was occupied by the Portuguese.
