South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea (Hangul: 대한민국, Hanja: 大韓民國; Daehan Minguk), is a country in the north-eastern part of the Asian continent on the southern part of the Korean Peninsula that became officially known as the Republic of Korea after the division of the country of Korea in 1945. South Korea borders the demilitarised zone with North Korea, the Yellow Sea, the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan. South Korea has approximately 3000 islands, which lie mainly off the southern and western coast. Approximately 51 million people live in South Korea.
