About this destination

Sri Lanka (English: Sri Lanka; Sinhala: ශ්‍රී ලංකා (Shrī Laṁkā), Tamil: இலங்கை (Ilaṅkai)), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and formerly Ceylon, is a country in South Asia. The country is an island state in the Indian Ocean and has 22,409,381 (2017) inhabitants. Due to its favourable position on the path of the great sea routes between West Asia and Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka has traditionally been a strategic naval base and a centre of Buddhist religion and culture since antiquity. Today it is a multi-religious country, where almost a third of the population follows religions other than Buddhism, notably Hinduism, Christianity and Islam.
