Suriname, officially the Republic of Suriname, is a republic on the north coast of South America with Paramaribo as its capital. The country was a colony of the Netherlands from 1667 to 1954 and afterwards a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. On 25 November 1975, Suriname became independent. The Surinamese population consists of several ethnic groups, none of which forms an absolute majority. The lingua franca and official language is Dutch, while Surinamese, also known as Sranan(tongo), is also important. In addition, a number of local and indigenous languages are in use. The republic has an area of 163,820 km², a coastline of 386 km, and borders Brazil, Guyana and French Guiana.
