An unprecedented humanitarian disaster is unfolding in Syria. No trips to Syria are currently being offered. Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Asia. It borders the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east and southeast, Jordan to the south, and Lebanon and Israel to the southwest. Part of Syria, the Golan Heights, has been annexed by Israel. The Euphrates cuts through the country from northwest to southeast. The capital is Damascus. Other major cities are Aleppo, Homs, Hama and Latakia. The modern Syrian state was established after the First World War as a French mandate territory.
