Turkmenistan, often also spelled Toerkmenistan, is a country in Central Asia that borders Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran and the Caspian Sea. From 1924 to 1991 it was part of the Soviet Union as one of the socialist Soviet republics (Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic). The country stretches from the Caspian Sea to the Amu Darya and borders Iran and Afghanistan to the south, and Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to the north.
