Uruguay, officially the Republic to the east of the Uruguay (Spanish: República Oriental del Uruguay) is a country in South America. The name is pronounced as Uruguay, in Dutch the stress usually falls on the first syllable, in Spanish on the last. Uruguay became an independent republic in 1828 and was given a constitution and a parliament in 1830. Since 1967 Uruguay has been a republic with a bicameral parliament. Uruguay is named after the river of the same name that forms the country's western border with Argentina and means River of the painted birds in Guaraní.
